A recent study, published in Behaviour Research and http://quantumvisionsystemreview.org/tesla-code-secrets-program-review/Tesla Code Secrets Therapy (Nordgreen et al. 2012 Jan; 50(1):13-21) reports on the factors that may predict the success, or otherwise, of guided and unguided self-help treatments for social anxiety disorder (or SAD). Tine Nordgreen, a PhD student with Professor Odd Havik at the University of Bergen, Norway, compiled data on the severity of SAD symptoms in 245 self-recruited patients undertaking self-help programmes, through a collaboration with colleagues in Sweden. The authors also took the details of each self-help programme into account, by noting the number of modules completed, and the patient’s attitude towards treatment - is self-help seen as a credible intervention or not?No significant differences were found for age, gender, marital status, previous treatment, or ongoing use of medication, upon comparing the patients undertaking unguided self-help to those receiving some guidance. Critically, 75% of guided self-help patients stuck to their programme, while only 50% of the unguided patients achieved the same. The researchers found that the more credible the unguided patients found their self-help programmes, the more likely they were to maintain it. Credibility ratings showed no obvious difference between the unguided and guided groups, suggesting that provided one trusts in the programme, guidance is not a prerequisite for adherence.
